An ever increasing number of client companies are turning, and will turn, to Skype as a means of conducting initial interviews. Skype will replace the “initial” phone screen that employers have adopted over the last few years. As a result, one needs to remember some key points.
1. Dress as you would for any in-person interview. Remember, the employer can see you and how you present yourself. Always dress for the job you want, not necessarily for the job you have. Be careful of the business casual look; it may not be appropriate for the interview.
2. If you remember the old TV show from the 60’s, “Candid Camera” the saying. “Smile, you’re on Candid Camera” will make sense. It’s important on any interview especially one via Skype to be aware of your presence and to smile. Be engaging, confident, pleasant, and speak slowly. This may be your only shot at the job you want.
3. Make sure that you look directly into the camera. Eye contact in any face to face interview is essential. Think of yourself as a network news anchor on TV, and make that good eye contact so that you draw the person into the conversation.
I hope these few tips help the next time you find yourself preparing for a Skype interview. I never say “good luck”, I always say….be prepared!
